Middle Contry Reads Trivia Challenge

Patrons of all ages can win prizes by answering trivia questions based on The Wednesday Wars, by Gary D. Schmidt, at any reference desk.  All you have to do is go to a reference desk, answer the question correctly, and then choose a prize!

We are pleased to announce that this year’s title for the 2012 Middle Country Reads pick is The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt. Copies of this great read can be found at Middle Country Public Library at both Selden and Centereach. About This Book:
Meet Holling Hoodhood, a seventh‐grader at Camillo Junior High, who must
spend Saturday afternoons with his teacher, Mrs. Baker, while the rest of the class has religious instruction. Mrs. Baker doesn’t like Holling; he’s sure of it. Why else would she make him read the plays of William Shakespeare outside class? But everyone has bigger things to worry about, like Vietnam. His father wants Holling and his sister to be on their best behavior: the success of his business depends on it. But how can Holling stay out of trouble when he has so much to contend with? A bully demanding cream puffs; angry rats; and a baseball hero signing autographs the very same night Holling has to appear in a play in yellow tights! As fate sneaks up on him again and again, Holling finds motivation in the most unexpected places and musters up the courage to embrace his destiny, in spite of himself. Gary D. Schmidt has written a wonderfully witty and compelling novel about a teenage boy’s mishaps and adventures over the course of the 1967‐68 school year.

 

Directions for the Scavenger Hunt!

The Middle Country Reads 2011 selection is Lethal Legacy by Linda Fairstein.  This mystery takes place in and around the New York Public Library’s Main Branch at Fifth Avenue and 42^nd Street.  Part of the plot involves characters trying to find twelve different parts of the Waldseemuller Map from 1507, widely thought to be the first map to use the name “America.”

To celebrate this year’s Read we will be having a community wide scavenger hunt!

The scavenger hunt will begin the week of January 17th and end the week of March 21^st.  Please note that the clue can be found on the top tabs of this blog!

Please see a librarian at Selden or Centereach for more information!

• You will be hunting for pieces of the Waldseemuller map!  The pieces will be hidden at different local businesses throughout the Middle Country community.
• One full map will be completed in the Centereach building and one full map will be completed in the Selden building.
• The clue will lead you to the local business you need to visit in order to receive a piece of the map.
• Once you solve the clue, you will go to the business to collect your map piece (approximately 3” x 5”).   You will need to submit your map piece at the adult reference desk at either MCPL Centereach or Selden.  You will receive a raffle ticket for the giveaway for each map piece you submit (one from each participating business.)
• All map pieces must be submitted no later than noon on Wednesday, March 30^th.
• There will be two raffle giveaways – one for each building.
• Raffle winners will be announced at the author event on Thursday, March 31^st.

The 2011 Middle Country Reads title is unveiled!

The Middle Country Reads title for 2011 is Lethal Legacy by Linda Fairstein. Why did we select this title for our selection this year? Check out the summary and see for yourself:

Middle Country Public Library hosts several programs that celebrate the Middle Country Reads pick Lucia Lucia. Our next program, How to Make Films with No or Little Money, is going to be held on January 26 in Selden. This program also ties into the young adult Adriana Trigiani title Viola in Reel Life. 2010 Middle Country Reads title is announced!

Everyone at Middle County Public Library is pleased to announce that the 2010 title for Middle Country Reads is LUCIA, LUCIA by Adriana Trigiani. We were torn between several titles this year, but the story of a strong-willed Italian-American woman growing up in Greenwich Village in the 1950′s kept coming up at our roundtable discussions. It became clear that this title would be great as our 2010 Middle Country Reads title.
