About This Book:
Meet Holling Hoodhood, a seventh‐grader at Camillo Junior High, who must
spend Saturday afternoons with his teacher, Mrs. Baker, while the rest of the class has religious instruction. Mrs. Baker doesn’t like Holling; he’s sure of it. Why else would she make him read the plays of William Shakespeare outside class? But everyone has bigger things to worry about, like Vietnam. His father wants Holling and his sister to be on their best behavior: the success of his business depends on it. But how can Holling stay out of trouble when he has so much to contend with? A bully demanding cream puffs; angry rats; and a baseball hero signing autographs the very same night Holling has to appear in a play in yellow tights! As fate sneaks up on him again and again, Holling finds motivation in the most unexpected places and musters up the courage to embrace his destiny, in spite of himself. Gary D. Schmidt has written a wonderfully witty and compelling novel about a teenage boy’s mishaps and adventures over the course of the 1967‐68 school year.

The Middle Country Reads 2011 selection is Lethal Legacy by Linda Fairstein. This mystery takes place in and around the New York Public Library’s Main Branch at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. Part of the plot involves characters trying to find twelve different parts of the Waldseemuller Map from 1507, widely thought to be the first map to use the name “America.”
To celebrate this year’s Read we will be having a community wide scavenger hunt!
The scavenger hunt will begin the week of January 17th and end the week of March 21st. Please note that the clue can be found on the top tabs of this blog!
Please see a librarian at Selden or Centereach for more information!
- You will be hunting for pieces of the Waldseemuller map! The pieces will be hidden at different local businesses throughout the Middle Country community.
- One full map will be completed in the Centereach building and one full map will be completed in the Selden building.
- The clue will lead you to the local business you need to visit in order to receive a piece of the map.
- Once you solve the clue, you will go to the business to collect your map piece (approximately 3” x 5”). You will need to submit your map piece at the adult reference desk at either MCPL Centereach or Selden. You will receive a raffle ticket for the giveaway for each map piece you submit (one from each participating business.)
- All map pieces must be submitted no later than noon on Wednesday, March 30th.
- There will be two raffle giveaways – one for each building.
- Raffle winners will be announced at the author event on Thursday, March 31st.

The Middle Country Reads title for 2011 is Lethal Legacy by Linda Fairstein. Why did we select this title for our selection this year? Check out the summary and see for yourself:
In Linda Fairstein’s Lethal Legacy, the New York Public Library houses dazzling treasures—and deadly secrets.
When Assistant District Attorney Alex Cooper is summoned to Tina Barr’s apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, she finds a neighbor convinced that the young woman was assaulted. But the terrified victim, a conservator of rare books and maps, refuses to cooperate with investigators. Then another woman is found murdered in that same apartment with an extremely valuable book, believed to have been stolen. As Alex pursues the murderer, she is drawn into the strange and privileged world of the Hunt family, major benefactors of the New York Public Library and passionate rare book collectors.
Eventually Alex connects their internal family rivalries to a priceless edition of Alice in Wonderland, which also contains the world’s oldest map. Would one of the well-bred Hunts be willing to kill for the treasures? The search for the answer takes Alex and her team on a breathtaking chase from Manhattan’s grandest apartments to the secret tunnels and chambers of the New York Public Library, and finally to a nineteenth century underground vault. There, in the pitch-black darkness, Alex comes face-to face with the killer who values money more than life.
Featuring a cast of elite, erudite, and downright eccentric characters, and a complex trail of clues that will have you guessing until the final pages, Lethal Legacy is Linda Fairstein’s most beguiling thriller yet.

What is Lucia, Lucia about?
Set in the glittering, vibrant New York City of 1950, Lucia, Lucia is the enthralling story of a passionate, determined young woman whose decision to follow her heart changes her life forever.
As richly detailed as the couture garments Lucia sews, as emotional as the bonds in her big Italian family, it is the story of one woman who believes that in a world brimming with so much promise, she can, and should be able to, have it all.
