Middle Country READS, an initiative jointly sponsored by Middle Country Public Library and the Middle Country Central School District, provides an opportunity for community unity through its use of the One Book philosophy. One Book projects are community-wide reading programs, in which the community “shares” the same book. It is the hope of the Library and the School District that by sharing the experience of reading the same book, the community will come together in conversation and that new relationships will form between individuals, families, and businesses.
I went to see Gary Schmidt on March 17 and he was great. If you love books with heart you need to do yourself a favor and read books by Gary Schmidt. He is a great storyteller, and a true wordsmith. His language paints such a complete world that his characters jump off the page and everything feels real. I’ve read three of his books – The Wednesday Wars, Okay for Now and Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy – they are so wonderful! He understands what it’s like to be an adolescent – it’s painful, yet wonderful, because everything is new and untried. He’s a great writer.
